Grid Society terms explained: How to recognise and change your emotional state in real time.

Updated: Jun 30

"I know I feel off, but I don’t know what to do next. How do I break it down and move at the same time?"

Most people struggle with feelings they cannot clearly name.

They use words like “off,” “stressed,” or “overthinking,” but these terms are too vague and cliché to be useful. They keep you stuck because you cannot walk away from something you have not defined properly.

Your Emotions Have an Address

At Grid Society, we encourage people to name their feelings through the personal development tools we create.

The concept of The Universal Grid™ (created by Grid Society) changes the experience of feeling stuck by giving your emotions a specific place.

There is a psychological strategy called externalisation, a topic we explore in our counselling workshops.

It involves separating yourself from your thoughts so they no longer define who you are.

Instead of believing, "I am overwhelmed," you recognise that you are simply standing in a state of overwhelm. In Grid Society terms, that state becomes a specific place that you have the power to move from.

When you name your location on the Universal Grid, you move from being the emotion to observing it.

See the Exit

This is the point where you take control.

Once you know exactly where you are standing on the map, you can finally see the exit. You can visualise yourself stepping from one mental space into another. You are no longer trapped in the fog; you are the navigator of your emotional state, able to move towards a new set of coordinates.

The Universal Grid™ is more than an emotional vocabulary.

It gives you the language to recognise your position in real time and the structure to step out of it and into action.

It strengthens your emotional intelligence by turning vague feelings into clear, defined, and actionable states, allowing you to understand, direct, and move your internal world with precision.

Grid Term 1.

The Grey Grid

The state where your mind feels overwhelmed, distressed, heavy, or stagnant. It creates a mental fog that makes it difficult to think clearly or identify a logical exit.

The Phrase:

“I think I’m standing on the Grey Grid™ right now.”

The Goal:

To recognise the state and identify and exit.

Grid Term 2.

The Green Grid™

The state of organisation, logic, and decision-making. On the Green Grid™, you move from "feeling" to "doing." It is the transition point where you stop waiting for the perfect mood and start creating steady, structured movement through discipline and strategy.

The Phrase:

“I am on the Green Grid™ and moving forward."

The Goal:

To replace emotional "grey fog".

Grid Term 3.

The Orange Grid™

The Orange Grid™ is the space you think about when you imagine your best self. It is the place that makes you feel fulfilled, excited, joyful, calm and assured. You are doing the things that feel like you. You are moving in the direction you visualised. You feel aligned and you feel like you belong in your own life.

The Phrase:

"I feel like I am on the Orange Grid™ today."

The Goal:

To create and obtain your vision.

Grid Term 4.

The Universal Grid™

The total landscape of your internal world. It is the realisation that life is a series of coordinates rather than a single fixed point. The Universal Grid™ is specifically designed for the areas of your life where you have complete agency and control - your perspective, your decisions, and your movement.

Note on Scope: The Grid is not a tool for external circumstances beyond your control. It is a tool for managing your response, your state, and your strategy within the territory you own.
  • Goal 01: To gain perspective and realise every state is temporary and navigable.

  • Goal 02: To move across the entire Grid with intent.

Grid Term 5.

Grey Voices™

In everyday language, it is known as negative thinking or the inner critic.

On the Universal Grid™, we call it the Grey Voices™.

It uses fear, doubt, and self-judgment to create grey fog and self-sabotage. It is the deceptive internal narrator that tries to convince you that you are broken, your life is broken, and that you are incapable of navigating it.

The Phrase:

"That is just my Grey Voice talking."

The Goal:

To strip it of its authority.

Grid Term 6.

The Grey Grid Roundabout™

In everyday language, this is known as overthinking, rumination, or "spiralling."

On the Grey Grid™, we call it the Grey Grid Roundabout™.

It is when your thoughts loop repeatedly around the same worry, fear or scenario without reaching a resolution. It is a mechanical trap that keeps you stuck in place, consuming your energy without producing any forward movement.

The Phrase:

"I am stuck on the Grey Grid Roundabout."

The Goal:

To recognise the loop and perform a Reset to exit the cycle.

Grid Term 7.

Orange Space™

In everyday language, this is your “workspace” or “ritual setup.”

Within Grid Society™, it is the intentional environment and mental rhythm you activate to perform inner work, reflection, and visioning. It is built on the principle of Mindset Over Environment.

There are 2 primary forms of Orange Space:

  1. A Be Still Orange Space™

A grounded physical sanctuary, such as a specific chair, desk, or room, that anchors your rhythm through familiarity and stillness.

  1. A Floating Orange Space™

A portable rhythm or “kit”, such as a bag, notebook, or tools, that allows you to activate your inner work mindset anywhere.

Our followers often document and share their Orange Space setups with us. These moments act as a visual signal of commitment to their inner work journey.

The Phrase:

"I need to get into my Orange Space.”

Grid Term 8.

MAKE GRIDMOVES™

The Simple Version

Small, consistent, strategic, and pre-defined steps. These are the practical actions you take every day to turn your thinking into real progress.

While normal moves are often reactive, impulsive, or driven by pressure and urgency, GRIDMOVES™ are intentional actions designed to reposition your thinking, your emotions, and the direction of your life.

The Phrase:

"I need to make good GRIDMOVES™ today.”

The Goal:

To replace instant emotional reactions with pre-defined steps that ensure you are actually moving forward, not just staying busy.

Grid Term 9.

GRIDCHANGER™

The Simple Version

The person who refuses to stay stuck. This has nothing to do with being a “boss,” a “diva,” or a social media “one-percenter.” It is not about fame or status. A Gridchanger™ is anyone who chooses to push past their own boundaries and move forward on their own terms.

Being a Gridchanger™ does not mean you have reached a final destination. It means you had the courage to start and keep moving. Progress is measured by your own growth, not public opinion.

The Phrase:

"I am a Gridchanger™".

The Goal:

To take ownership of your ability to reposition your life to any coordinate you choose, regardless of external labels or challenges.

Grid Term 10.

THISISGRIDLIFE

This is the term we use for those moments when things start to make sense and you are no longer being dictated to by your external environment or external problems. It is when a problem shows up and instead of reacting you work through it properly using the tools.

It is when you are sitting down, thinking clearly, writing things out, and navigating your way through life step by step. It is a lifestyle built on recognising your patterns, staying with the process, and seeing your growth as it happens in real time.

The Phrase:

"THISISGRIDLIFE"  is what you say to yourself in those moments when you realise you’ve changed course for the better.

The Goal:

It is the breakthrough when you realise you are winning. Sometimes the win is quiet. Other times, it is obvious. Either way, you know you are winning.
