Ask Google “What are the stages of personal growth?” and you will find all sorts of diagrams, wheels, and generic self-help language. But inside Grid Society, growth is not presented as a cycle or concept. It is a state. A location. A real emotional place you pass through.
We do not just speak about growth. We track it. We name it. We live it. There are three clear states in the personal growth journey:
The Grey State: Where you recognise you are stuck and begin separating yourself from it.
The Owning State: Where you take full responsibility for what happens next.
The Thriving State: Where you recognise that you are living what you once defined as growth.
Each one has its own energy, challenges, and decision points. Here is what they really mean, the Grid Society way.

1. GREY: WHERE GROWTH BEGINS...
This is where I am
No one talks about this part enough, yet this is exactly where growth begins.
It is not a glamorous or energising place. It is heavy, unclear, and emotionally draining. Grey is not a vibe or a personality trait. It is a trap, a mental and emotional state that keeps you circling the same thoughts, habits, and pain without resolution. You feel stuck. You want to change. Yet your own patterns seem stronger than your desire to move forward.
Grey is where you know something needs to shift, but you cannot find the energy or clarity to make it happen. It is where you feel tired of your own voice, exhausted by your own excuses, but unable to break the loop. This stage is often mislabelled as laziness or avoidance, when in truth, it is emotional congestion. You are not unwilling to grow. You are overwhelmed by the weight of everything unresolved.
You are on the Grey Grid when you find yourself experiencing:
Repetitive spirals
Internal tantrums
Unexplained delays
Excessive overthinking
Crying, shutting down, or stalling
Believing your own excuses
Many people stay here for months, sometimes years, without realising they are in the Grey. The first sign of growth is not action. It is recognition. Once you can name this state for what it is, you begin to see yourself more clearly. You stop performing. You stop pretending it is fine. You face the discomfort head-on and quietly admit, “This is where I am.”
That moment of honesty is the beginning of movement. Not because everything is fixed, but because you finally acknowledge that something must change. Growth begins the moment you say: I do not want to stay here.
2. GREY: WHERE GROWTH DEEPENS
I do not want to stay here.
Grey is the point where you stop pretending it is fine. You are no longer just experiencing the spiral, you are observing it. This is the shift from being in it to being aware of it. Something clicks. You know this cannot continue.
You start to see the truth of your situation:
You become tired of your own cycles
You become honest about what is no longer working
You stop glamorising chaos and confusion
You acknowledge that something must change
These are not surface-level thoughts. They are hard-earned recognitions. You are finally facing the part of yourself that wants more — and for the first time, you are listening.
That shift from denial into clarity is the true beginning of growth. You cannot leave a place you are unwilling to admit you are in.

2. OWNING: GROWTH DEPENDS ON ME
Green is the state where you begin to reclaim responsibility, not for what happened to you, but for what happens next.

This is the moment you realise that the state of your life, your peace, your direction, and your future belong to you now. No one is coming to save you. No one else is to blame for how you choose to move forward.
Owning is the stage of active accountability. It is not performative. It is private. This is where you stop outsourcing your power and start stepping directly into it.
Here is what owning looks like:
You take responsibility for how long you have stayed stuck
You stop blaming others for your current state
You accept that your next chapter must be authored by you
You begin to take small, deliberate, consistent Gridmoves
You also begin to own your past without shame. You own your present without excuses. Most powerfully, you own your ability to change without needing validation, apology, or permission. Growth becomes yours because responsibility has become yours.

3. THRIVING: WHEN GROWTH IS RECOGNISED
Thriving is not an accident. It is not luck. It is not a surprise. It is the natural result of moving through the Grey, and owning your shift in the Green.

You recognise you are thriving because you already defined what thriving would look and feel like. You named it long before you reached it. You mapped it out. You said to yourself, “When I feel this… when I act like this… when I stop chasing and start being - that will be my version of thriving.” So when it arrives, you notice it. You honour it.
This stage is not about showing off. It is about recognising alignment. You are no longer operating from fear or lack. You are not performing growth. You are simply living it.
You know you are thriving when:
Your nervous system feels calmer
You enjoy your own company
Your decisions are rooted, not reactive
You are no longer triggered by old dynamics
You have stopped auditioning for love
You know what enough looks like
This is not the end of growth. It is the stabilisation of it.
🟠 Orange Tales Only
So what are the stages of personal growth?
Not abstract ideas. Not trendy jargon. Not shallow self-help trends. They are emotional states. And every one of them matters.
Grey is when you recognise that you are stuck. Owning is when you accept that no one else is responsible for your next move. Thriving is when you start to see what you once prayed for and you do not dismiss it.
At Grid Society, we name these states because we believe growth should be visible, trackable, and structured. You do not need to guess whether you are growing. You can see it.
Three states. One direction.

You appear confident on the outside, but you’re constantly second-guessing yourself in private. This truthfully keeps you up late at night and stops you from starting your day productively.
You’re productive, but your inner critic is still louder than your wins. Your successes feel short-lived to you.
You’ve tried affirmations, mantras, and mindset tips, but none of them help when the spiral starts.
You’re exhausted by how loud your mind gets. It’s just you in a mental battle with your own thoughts, and sometimes it can feel isolating, like nobody really gets you.

About - Grey Voices
Confront the Grey Voices, Overcome your Inner Critic gives you practical tools to identify, challenge and shut down the inner critic that’s been running the show in your mind for far too long. You will learn how to recognise your thought spirals in real time and interrupt them before they drag your energy, confidence or clarity.
You’ll be guided back to what we call your Orange Voice. This is the part of you that speaks with clarity, steadiness and strength. For some, that voice has been buried. For others, it’s been drowned out by noise. For many, it’s simply never been fed; their confidence, self-belief and inner authority were never given the space to grow. This is where you strengthen your voice and learn how to recognise when your inner critic is speaking, so you can use the strategy in real time.
This workshop includes our now-infamous 13-Step Defence, a highly practical tool that helps you confront negative thoughts the moment they show up. Not later. Not in theory. In real life. You’ll walk away with a structured strategy that helps you become more conscious of the thought habits and mental patterns that have been working against you, so you can interrupt the spiral and rewrite the algorithm.
Once you take back control of your mind, something softens and for the first time in a while, life starts to feel possible again...
